Mega Construx is now playing its part in the billion-dollar Game of Thrones business. Two kits have recently become available - for the time being, however, only as an advance sale in the USA.

Game of Thrones is a success story from HBO. A large part of the American pay TV channel’s turnover of 1.7 billion US dollars in the second quarter of this year alone is likely to go back to the fantasy series. According to Handelsblatt analysts, Game of Thrones contributes around one billion dollars to sales annually. Around 12 million viewers in the USA alone watched every episode of the last season. Numerous companies have acquired licenses in order to profit from the success with targeted merchandising. In keeping with the end of the series, HBO and Mega Construx have now announced a special souvenir for all fans. Under the label “Black Series” they are releasing a series of Mega Construx kits based on the blockbuster series. First of all, two Game of Thrones sets will be available via an online advance sale in the USA. All major retailers are due to follow in autumn.

Which sets does Mega Construx start with?

The first set represents the battle “Beyond the Wall”. Micro-action characters such as Jon Snow and the Night King can be positioned against a backdrop to realistically recreate the scene. The second set brings Daenerys and Drogon to life with a full-grown mythical creature and extendable fabric wingspan. Both figures are detailed, the Daenerys Micro Action figure can even climb its dragon. “We are pleased to announce our partnership with HBO to launch the game Thrones™ Construction Sets. This is a new line that allows fans, older collectors and experienced builders to experience the world of throne gaming like never before,” said Bisma Ansari, senior vice president at Mega Brands. “We have created sets that bring to life the characters and stunning locations with details only possible with Mega Construx.

Billions in licensing revenues

The Game of Thrones kits are part of a multi-year global licensing partnership with HBO. Mega Brands’ strategy is to also focus on themes inspired by popular brands. Sets from Mega Construx are also part of the portfolio, including Pokémon, Masters of the Universe and the Turtles. Jeff Peters, Vice President of Licensing & Retail at HBO: “We always strive to create new and exciting ways for fans to interact with Game of Thrones. Mega Brands has delivered a stunning, realistic and carefully designed line that celebrates the essence of the series while maintaining the high standard of quality that we aspire to in a partnership.” These new products underscore once again the importance of licensing around the toy and fan merchandise business. According to Licensing International, the industry association, retailers around the world sold around 230 billion dollars in licensed goods and services last year.
