The fabric that turns into fashion – Joachim Baumgartner, Trend Director of the international textile trade fair MUNICH FABRIC START, talked to Luna Journal about the fabric trends in the F/W 17/18 collections and the further development of denim. What the future brings, will be shown at the fabric trade fair in Munich from January 31.

Is children’s fashion growing closer to adult fashion?

There is currently a strong link to adult fashion. We have seen over many seasons that children’s fashion ultimately only differs in terms of its cute and funny prints from the main themes of womenswear, menswear, jeans, and sportswear. It’s also basically true to say that children’s trends are being increasingly interpreted independent of age and gender.

What are the buzzwords of the fabric trends for A/W 17/18?

Crafts & High-Tech, Love & Nostalgia, Comfort & Elegance are the buzzwords in the worlds of fabric right now.

 How are these being interpreted?

We’re seeing three main tendencies. Firstly, a melancholic retro fabric theme with lots of cuddly surfaces such as cord, velvet, plush, and sensational voluminous knitting yarns. In addition, one-color jacquards in mini and macro designs and floral, humorous, and witty prints. The second theme is strongly atmospheric with light and shadow effects, warm and cool. That is, materials with a lot of structure and optics between extreme matte, gloss, and 3D surfaces. High-quality classic meets progressive high-tech. In the third trend, the focus is on creating, moving, and making. Whether it’s craftsmanship, recycling, or something conjured up with the 3D printer.

What’s going on in the denim segment?

The reinterpretations of the denims have benefitted from an innovative dynamic and a boundless creativity, from attractive tweed effects and relief structures through subtle surface patterns to flowing, feminine materials. Always with a high amount of stretch. If only a fraction of these beautiful, newly developed denim fabrics reach the trade, we will soon have a real firework of new denims to look forward to.

 What’s new in sportswear?

The multifunctional fabrics and added wearables could revolutionize the entire market. Today, recharging our cell phone on our T-shirt sounds like something out of a science fiction film. But in ten years, this utopia could already be a reality. The developments and technical possibilities in this sector are very rapid right now.
