The first order was a software textbook written in English. Today Amazon Germany has over three hundred million different articles. Products from the children’s segment play an important role.

Amazon.co.uk was launched on 15 October 1998. At that time, only ten percent of Germans used the Internet, access was laboriously via noisy modems. Just a few dozen employees started working for Amazon Germany. The young start-up emerged from the integration of ABC Bücherdienst, a digital pioneer in Germany. Compared to today, the design of the website and product portfolio seemed modest. At that time, the range included around 900,000 German and English books, a search engine and bestseller lists. In addition, there was a gift service for sending books to customers wrapped in gift wrapping paper. The company quickly gained momentum. To date, the Group has invested more than eight billion euros in Germany. At the beginning of 2018, Amazon Germany employed over 16,000 permanent staff at over 30 locations. Since its launch, Amazon.de has developed into the website with the highest turnover after Amazon.com.

Amazon Germany is a major player in children’s equipment

Amazon Germany has long since become an important player in the children’s segment. The group itself and numerous salespeople sell children’s clothing, toys, books, equipment and much more via the online platform. Just one year after its founding, a children’s book took its place at the top of the sales league. In 1999, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” was among the best-selling books. Today the dimensions are much larger. During the Cyber-Monday week from November 19 to 26 alone, customers bought more than four million toys on Amazon.de. Products from the premium wooden toy supplier rewoodo were also there. Alexander Bochert, managing director of the family business: “As a manufacturer of traditional and simultaneously futuristic wooden toys, we can increase the findability of our products and reach new target groups with offers during the Cyber-Monday week. Under each Christmas tree belongs also a toy, which connects the family and children with the value of nature.”

Group bestseller lists are trend barometers

More than ever, the Amazon bestseller lists are trend barometers. Around the second Advent “Gregs Diary 13” was the best-selling children’s book. In the toy segment, the game of the year “Azul” came first, followed by the long-running hit “Lotti Karotti”. Tiptoi sets took 1st to 3rd place in the electronic toy category, with Anki’s Cozmo robot also leading the way. With a net turnover of over 8.8 billion euros, Amazon Germany is the undisputed largest online shop in Germany. Amazon is working on further expanding its market leadership. New logistics centres have been opened in Dortmund and Winsen, and another one is to be built in Mönchengladbach. There are extra-fast delivery services and the option of ordering products via the Alexa voice control system.
