Haba is on the road to success. For the second time in a row, the company has won the “Kinderspiel des Jahres” award for one of its products.

After “Funkelschatz” last year, the jury of experts for the “Kinderspiel des Jahres” prize has once again awarded the coveted prize to a Haba game. “Tal der Wikinger” convinced the experts. The tactics and skill game invites children from the age of six to a Viking competition in barrel bowling. Each player tries to roll the ball towards the barrels. Depending on which barrels fall over, the players move their Vikings forward on the jetty and receive coins. If you are unlucky or risk too much, your character falls into the water and gets nothing. The game structure includes 3-D Viking ships, an XXL game plan and 24 gold coins. The game was designed by the authors Marie and Wilfried Fort. Illustrator Maximilian Meinzold is responsible for the graphics.

What inspires the jury about the “Kinderspiel des Jahres 2019”?

The jury of the “Kinderspiel des Jahres” highlighted the following facets of the game: “Viking Valley is an exciting foray in which you can just play with skill. The tactical considerations in the battle for a position on the jetty are revealed with increasing experience and guarantee long-lasting fun. Everyone wants to start playing – just because of the beautiful material everyone can. Everybody can also bowl loose. There the barrels fly, there the joy is great. You learn the finesse here quasi bang on case. And if it goes wrong, it doesn’t increase the frustration, but only the ambition for another game.” The jury also praises the authors Wilfried and Marie Fort: “How the authors Fort challenge both skill and tactical thinking is as unique as it is novel in its mixture.

This is how “Valley of the Vikings” came into being

The development of the game was accompanied by a lot of tinkering. So there were several prototypes for “Valley of the Vikings”. The various elements of the 2019 children’s game were optimized again and again. Originally, for example, the bridge and coin compartments in the game box were planned. However, the players were not always able to reach both stations well. “Placing the player tiles in holes in the game plan solved the problem that the ball could get under the way quickly when rolling. So nothing can slip,” reports Annemarie Wolke of the Haba editorial team. Besides “Tal der Wikinger” another game from Haba could convince, by the way. The “Farm Gang” made it onto the jury’s recommendation list for “Kinderspiel des Jahres”. The cooperative dice running game depends on good cooperation. Together and with a little luck on the dice, the players must prevent the farm animals from running away. The game is aimed at children from the age of four.
