Karstadt to collaborate with El Corte Inglés

In August, just in time for the start of the fall/winter 2017 collections, Karstadt will begin carrying Sfera, the children and baby clothing line, in 50 shops across Germany. Sfera is a subsidiary of El Corte Inglés, the leading department store in Spain.

“The children and baby clothes from Sfera, a subsidiary of El Corte Inglés, have held their own against well-known labels such as Zara and H&M in the highly competitive Spanish market. We have worked intensively on this deal, in particular when it comes to the taste of German customers. Sfera is a great fit for our Karstadt customers,” explains Jörg Peter Schmiddem, head buyer for Karstadt.

The collaboration is based on the continued development of the department store into a marketplace. This strategy was presented by Karstadt’s CEO, Dr. Stephan Fanderl, at the Karstadt suppliers’ conference last May. “The department store is the only physical marketplace in the city,” explained Fanderl. “It offers the possibility for both bricks-and-mortar and pure online concepts to join us on the shop floor.” In addition, an off-price concept is to be launched in the Karstadt branches. Here, Karstadt will work with online partners to offer strongly discounted and well-known clothing brands on special areas within the stores. With this pilot project, Karstadt is seeking to attract additional customer groups. “With our new off-price concept, the customer will be able to order, buy, and also return products both online and offline. Everything will be possible in every channel.”
