From 20 to 23 September 2018, Kind + Jugend recorded 24,700 trade visitors from 123 countries and registered ten percent more visitors than in 2017. The proportion of visitors from abroad was 75 percent. More visitors came not only from abroad, but also from Germany. Many companies have already booked their booths for the upcoming year. Thus, 80 percent of the visitors plan to be at the successful baby and children’s outfitting fair again next year. At Kind + Jugend 2018, Luna Journal spoke with Katharina C. Hamma, Managing Director of Koelnmesse GmbH, about the steadily growing success of the baby and children’s outfitting fair.

This year, 1,217 companies from 49 countries took part at the Kind + Jugend, 86 percent of which came from abroad. Among them were 174 exhibitors from Germany without further represented companies, as well as 1,043 exhibitors from abroad.

“The increase in visitor numbers in particular testifies to the extraordinary dynamism of Kind + Jugend,” says Katharina C. Hamma, Managing Director of Koelnmesse GmbH, after four days at the fair. “Visitors not only appreciate the target-oriented business atmosphere with direct contacts at the fair, they are also inspired by the innovations and trends that exhibitors present in Cologne every year. This special quality both as a business platform and as a central innovation boost and trend barometer is only offered by Kind + Jugend”.

Exhibitors are satisfied with customer pitches

The exhibitors of this year’s Kind + Jugend were impressed by the quality of the visitors: “The visitors at our booth are very interested in our products and we were able to have good discussions in the B2B sector. On the whole, it can be summarized that at this year’s Kind + Jugend, quality takes precedence over quantity among the visitors”, Head of Marketing/PR at Kokadi, Andrea Junker Vierneisel.

Franziska Jäger, Public Relations, Riegg & Partner for the Fehn brand: “Kind + Jugend was great for us. We were able to hold a lot of discussions with distributors and we couldn’t complain. The “Swan Lake” collection was particularly well received by the female visitor group. Furthermore, we have noticed that the topic of motor skills is becoming more and more important for both sexes”.

“We were satisfied with the start on Thursday and Friday. As the focus this year was on “safety”, we were able to hold many interesting discussions on the subject of “safe sleeping”. Alvi can fall back on decades of expertise in this field. We are also very pleased that the new premature sleeping bag has aroused the interest of our visitors. Hardly any dealer has left us without buying our innovation. The new designs were also very well received. Unfortunately, the last two days of the fair were not quite as successful as the start: “There were hardly any visitors in the corridors and at the stands”, Stephanie Viehhofer, Managing Director of Alvi.

Sabine Gärtner, Marketing Manager Tomy: “We are more than excited about this year’s Kind + Jugend at our booth. We were able to have good conversations, including with many influencers. We were also very pleased to win the Consumer Award in the “World of Kids Toys” category for “Freddie the Firefly”. And with the game Gearation Fridge Magnet Set by Tomy to have been nominated for the Innovation Award 2018. It was very exciting to participate in both awardings and to be nominated. We’ll definitely be back next year as Kind + Jugend always presents great innovations every year that are very inspiring.”

“This year’s Kind + Jugend is comparable to last year’s edition. Everything is as it should be, we are very satisfied with the fair. Our products were very well received, as was our new baby nest which will be launched in January 2019”, Isabell Böhm, Public Relation, Riegg & Partner for the brand Träumeland.

The most diverse trade channels were represented on site. From the wholesale and retail trade, the specialized trade and department stores, up to the drugstore markets and the online trade. In general it can be said that the exhibitors praised the high-quality sales talks as well as the strong interest in new products and sales concepts.

More trade fair visitors from Europe and China

Visitor growth was achieved above all from the European countries. For example, more visitors were counted from Great Britain, France, Italy and Spain. Bulgaria, Latvia and the Czech Republic also registered more visitors. The number of visitors from Eastern Europe rose slightly overall, even though the numbers from Russia fell slightly. Once again there was a strong increase in visitors from Asia, with the numbers from China that particularly rose. There was also a slight upward trend in visitor participation from North America.

Kind + Jugend 2018 awards prizes for innovations

This year’s Kind + Jugend 2018 focused on safety, health and sustainability. Innovations were presented that inspired the industry and showed that manufacturers and designers are keeping up with the times and constantly adapting to the needs of their target groups. Numerous technical developments and digital applications have driven the topic of product safety forward. The importance of sustainability and the topic of health are also constantly becoming the focus of interest. The exhibitors also addressed this issue and presented numerous products and solutions.

The numerous innovations and trends of the exhibitors were supported and promoted by the various Kind + Jugend awards. The competitions and awards offer young designers and newcomers a stage where they can present their innovations and gain awareness.

The Innovation Award, which has been presented since 2005, has gained a high reputation in the industry over the years. As a result, the nomination and the award itself are regarded as important marketing instruments. Here are the winners of the Innovation Award 2018:

The Kids Design Award also went to Latvian designer Gintare Cerniauskaite for her product “Upe”. Lisanne Koning received a special mention for her product “Inside the box”.
