The world’s largest trade fair for board games, the SPIEL, will celebrate its 36th anniversary in 2018. From 25 to 28 October, 1,150 exhibitors will present more than 1,400 innovations from the board and card games sector on 80,000 m² in the Ruhr area city of Essen.

The market for board games is growing all the time: people all over the world are increasingly taking a break from digitalised everyday life and spending part of their leisure time playing board and card games. At the world’s largest trade fair for board and card games, from 25 to 28 October in Essen, retailers and consumers can get an idea of the latest and most innovative board games the market has to offer.

Fair grows compared to the previous year

The fact that the sector is growing is also reflected in the expansion of the trade fair: While in 2017 1,100 exhibitors exhibited their approximately 1,200 new products on 72,000 m² of exhibition space, this year 1,150 exhibitors presented more than 1,400 new board games on a total of 80,000 m². The supporting programme has also grown accordingly, with visitors expecting a total of more than 1,300 programme items spread over all days of the fair, which for the first time can also be called up online.

Exhibitors from all over the world

A total of 18 publishers from over 50 nations are represented at SPIEL ’18. In addition to European, American and Australian manufacturers, Asian publishers are increasingly taking part this year at the so-called country pavilions or with their own exhibition stands.

Awards for the best and most innovative games

The innoSPIEL prize for the most innovative board and card game will also be awarded during the fair on the evening of 24 October. From thousands of new publications, a jury consisting of trade journalists and dealers had nominated the three most innovative game ideas for innoSPIEL 2018. Bonk by David Harvey, Cool Runnings by Olivier Mahy as well as The Mind by Wolfgang Warsch will enter the race for the most innovative game of 2018.
