Due to the changed requirements on the market for toys, the established international toy and leisure fair Toy & Hobby China will take place next year for the first time under the new name Toy & Edu China.

After the introduction of the two-child policy in China in 2016, the number of newborns is increasing and so is the demand for learning toys. As a result Toy & Hobby China, the leading fair for toys in South China, will be renamed Guangzhou International Toy & Education Fair in 2019. This leads to the short form of the fair that has been successful for 30 years: Toy & Edu China.

China’s market for toys and baby products is booming

The Chinese market for toys and baby products is growing continuously. The well-known online shop JD.com reports that the eight best-selling products in 2018 were educational toys. The National Bureau of Statistics reports that the market value of educational materials has risen from $1.15 billion in 2011 to $3 billion in 2016. This almost tripled the market value. In addition, the market value of preschool education services rose to $90 billion in 2018.

Name change in response to rising demand

Wendy Wen, Senior General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, explains the name change as follows: “The STEM concept (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) is gaining popularity in China and parents are willing to spend more on toys and products that facilitate learning. We also see an increasing number of educational products and services, including kindergarten products, learning systems and brain training toys and a growing demand from buyers at our trade shows. We want to improve business interaction between these suppliers and buyers of educational products.”

Successful fair 2018

As a leading toy manufacturer and exporter with a growing number of children, China is a promising market. According to the National Health and Family Planning Commission, there were 236 million children under the age of 14 in 2016. Every year, 21 million newborns are expected. These market conditions provided the perfect basis for the great success of Toy & Hobby China (Toy & Edu China) and the concurrent Baby & Stroller China competition this year.

“We are grateful that the fairs have been well received over the last three decades as an effective business platform. At these fairs, exhibitors succeed in promoting their brands while buyers find a wide range of quality products,” Wen explains.

The products were presented this year in seven halls on 100,000 sqm2. 1105 exhibitors from ten countries and regions met about 57,000 buyers from 76 countries. Toy & Edu China and Baby & Stroller China are organised by the Guangdong Toy Association, Guangzhou Li Tong Messe Frankfurt Co Ltd and Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd.
