Zalando continues to grow. In the second quarter of 2019, the number of active customers increased year-on-year by 3.7 million (15.2 percent) to 28.3 million customers in 17 European markets.

The number of page impressions from Zalando alone rose by 34.3 percent to 986.4 million compared to the first quarter. According to Zalando, 84 percent of the clicks came via mobile devices. The number of orders in the quarter also rose to a new record of 36.1 million.

Zalando as Starting Point for Fashion

Chief Financial Officer David Schröder said in a press release: “More customers than ever have chosen Zalando as their Starting Point for Fashion. This shows that our focus on providing customers with the best shopping experience is paying off”.

The company increased its gross merchandise volume by 23.7 percent to 2.0 billion euros. Sales rose by 20.1 percent to 1.6 billion euros. In the same period, Zalando achieved EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) of 101.7 million euros, which corresponds to a margin of 6.4 percent.

Partner programs provide a wide range of services

“Our transformation into a platform is continuing,” says David Schröder. “The growth of our partner program makes our product range even more attractive and diverse for customers. At the same time, this means that our GMV is growing significantly faster than sales – in line with our long-term strategy”.

Total profit guidance for 2019 raised

No wonder that Zalando is raising its profit forecast for the year as a whole based on these figures and now expects adjusted EBIT in the upper half of the 175-225 million euro range. In addition, Zalando expects Gmv growth of 20-25 percent and sales growth around the lower end of this range.

Even more investments

Investments of around 300 million euros are planned for the 2019 financial year. This is how Zalando intends to expand its product range. The focus will be particularly on the premium segment, the range of sustainable fashion and the further expansion of the partner program and cooperation with offline retailers. More than 1,300 stationary stores are already connected to the Zalando platform.

Zalando will then present the next business figures on 31 October 2019.
