The globally relevant issues in society such as sustainability, e-mobility, digitization and design standards are also reflected in the worldwide hardware trends in 2020. Increasing environmental awareness is also becoming noticeable in the areas of the selection of materials and sustainable production.

eStrollers are ready and will be a further addition to the urban mobility scene in the future,“ said Michael Neumann, board member of the Federal Association of German children‘s equipment manufacturers (BDKH) in an interview with the newspaper „Die Welt“ prior to the Kind + Jugend.

 eStrollers and smart products

The hardware manufacturer Cybex has already launched the Cybex E-Priam. Nikolai Geissler, SVP Group Program Management: „This electric stroller has been very well received by the parents who have used it so far. We will definitely continue to invest in these areas, always under the premise of our D.S.F innovation principle, in which design, safety and functionality go hand in hand“. Other hardware manufacturers are rather cautious when it comes to estrollers: „It is an interesting area that we would like to address later. At present, it is not the right time to implement such a project. In addition, we haven‘t yet reached the technical level to be able to integrate this smart solution into our products,“ says Thomas Syring, Sales Director Central Europe of the Thule Group.

Jörg Zehe, Managing Director at ABC Design, believes that electric strollers and smart tools are among the most popular hardware trends. The revolutionary concepts of the last few years have turned into realizable solutions suitable for everyday use. According to Zehe, today‘s parents represent new, modern family ideas and forms. They demand strollers that can be adapted to their individual lifestyle. As a result, the industry is now more challenged than ever to meet consumer demands with innovative and flexible products.

Innovation for the year 2020

Geissler from Cybex is confident that the smart product segment will play an increasingly important role in the children‘s industry: „We, for instance, already launched the Sensorsafe technology, a smart control warning system for some of our child seats, in 2018. The Sensorsafe clip is to be attached to the belt system of these seats and informs the driver about the child‘s safety and well-being via an app,“ Geissler explains. According to Nina Rosenthal, Marketing Director EMEA of Dorel Juvenile and Global Brand Director Maxi-Cosi & Quinnys, with their many comfortable features the strollers set, next to the optimal orientation towards different lifestyles, a new standard for the thermoregulated reversible mattress, adjustable footrest, an integrated nap keeper in the sun canopy and practical storage options. „Especially the Millennials want more comfort, ease of use and a stylish design. This is also reflected in the product trends,“ Rosenthal says.

Interest in manufacturing processes & materials

„We have noticed the trend that parents want to know where products come from and under what conditions they are manufactured. With our own factory, we can ensure that our products are manufactured in a safe, fair and environmentally friendly manner as well as under humane working conditions,“ says Aernout Dijkstra-Hellinga, Senior Lead Designer of Bugaboo. Juliane Volk, Regional Marketing Manager DACH at Stokke confirms this: „We can clearly see that customers have a high awareness of what materials are used. In addition, the sustainability aspect is becoming more and more important and when it comes to their own child, the theme becomes an even more important factor.“

Stroller Safety

For the company Cybex, the issue of safety continues to be the leading one. „We take the safety of the little ones extremely seriously, which is also reflected in the opening of our own crash test facility for child seats in April 2019,“ Geissler says. „Of course, safety for children is a very emotional topic for parents. When choosing the right child seat, parents often rely on seals of quality such as those from Stiftung Warentest and ADAC. The results often have a high influence on the consumer‘s selection and thus on the sales and market success of a product. Test institutes therewith assume a great responsibility towards consumers and us as manufacturers,“ Nina Rosenthal explains.
